Manufacturing of Nutritional Yeast -  Subpart CCCC

Applicability: eCFR Subpart CCCC [ecfr.gov]

This subpart applies to:
  1. Affected sources at nutritional yeast manufacturing facilities that are, is located at, or is part of, Major Sources of HAPs*.
Affected sources:
  1. Collection of equipment used in the manufacture of nutritional yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae, including fermentation vessels (fermenters).
Definition of "Nutritional yeast manufacturing facility":
  • A facility that makes yeast for the purpose of becoming an ingredient in dough for bread or any other yeast-raised baked product, or for becoming a nutritional food additive intended for consumption by humans.
  • Does not include production of yeast intended for consumption by animals, such as an additive for livestock feed.

*Major Sources of HAPs emit or have the potential to emit:
  • ≥ 10 tons/year of any single HAP; or
  • ≥ 25 tons/year of total HAPs.
  • Area Sources emit less than Major Sources.

Partial Exemptions:
  1. Emission limitations in this subpart do not apply to:
    1. Flask fermentation
    2. Pure-culture fermentation
    3. Yeasting-tank fermentation
    4. Any other set-batch fermentation
    5. Any operations after the last dewatering operation
