This subpart applies to:
- Sulfuric acid production units that commenced construction on or before Aug 19, 1971.
If the sulfuric acid production unit was modified after Aug 19, 1971, then the sulfuric acid production unit is subject to NSPS H.
Definition of sulfuric acid production unit:
- Any facility producing sulfuric acid by the contact process by burning elemental sulfur, alkylation acid, hydrogen sulfide, organic sulfides and mercaptans, or acid sludge.
- Does not include facilities where conversion to sulfuric acid is utilized primarily as a means of preventing emissions to the atmosphere of sulfur dioxide or other sulfur compounds.
