Hospital/Medical/Infectious Waste Incinerators which Commenced Construction after June 20, 1996 -  Subpart Ec

Applicability: eCFR Subpart Ec [ecfr.gov]

This subpart applies to:
  1. Hospital/medical/infectious waste incinerators (HMIWI) that:
    • Commence construction after June 20, 1996; or
    • Commence modification after Mar 16, 1998
Physical or operational changes made to existing HMIWIs solely for the purpose of complying with NSPS Ce are not considered modifications.


Not subject to this subpart:
  1. Periods where only pathological waste, low-level radioactive waste, and/or chemotherapeutic waste is burned*.
  2. Co-fired combustors*.
  3. Combustors required to have a permit under Section 3005 of the Solid Waste Disposal Act.
  4. Combustors subject to NSPS Cb , Ea, or Eb.
  5. Pyrolysis units.
  6. Cement kilns firing hospital waste and/or medical/infectious waste.
*These units may have to submit notifications and proof of exempt status, and maintain relevant records. Please see the rule text for full details.
