Nebraska Students’ Environmental Artwork to be Featured in 2021 “Nebraska: Don’t Waste It” Calendar
The artwork of 12 Nebraska students will be featured in the 2021 “Nebraska: Don’t Waste It!” environmental calendar. The statewide contest is sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) and focuses on the importance of waste reduction, recycling and litter cleanup.
While the students traditionally are invited to a ceremony at the State Capitol, NDEE took a different approach this year to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. Students received an art kit and congratulatory letter to recognize their talents and contributions. Each month, the calendar features one of the 12 winning environmental posters.
The entry featured on the cover was submitted by Erin Gegg, a sixth-grade student from Shelton Public Schools in Shelton.
The 12 winners who are featured in the calendar are:
Brendan Mohr, a Kindergarten student from Westfall Elementary, Malcolm.
Dylan Kalvelage, a ninth-grade student from Hastings High School, Hastings.
Branson Tejcka, a sixth-grade student from Arapahoe-Holbrook Public Schools, Arapahoe.
Theresa Schiavone, a 10th-grade student from Bayard High School, Bayard.
Grace Hoffman, a third-grade student from Chambers Public Schools, Chambers.
Mercy Mae McDonald, a third-grade student from Centura Public Schools, Cairo.
Brooklyn Green, a second-grade student from Lakeview Elementary School, Lincoln.
Kasey Druba, a fourth-grade student from Norris Intermediate School, Firth.
Lucy Mendenhall, a sixth-grade student from St. Pius/St. Leo, Omaha.
Erin Gegg, a sixth-grade student from Shelton Public Schools, Shelton.
Breena Potter, a ninth-grade student from Norris High School, Firth.
Beylah Pulliam, a third-grade student from Elm Creek Public Schools, Elm Creek.
“Despite the pandemic disrupting work and school schedules this year, we received very high quality entries,” Macy said. “The students’ artwork convey important messages about protecting our environment.”
