March 27 Information Session Focuses on Milford Landfill Permit

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality will conduct a public information session in Milford on March 27, to provide members of the public the opportunity to discuss a permit renewal and modification proposal for a solid waste landfill operated by G & P Development, Inc.

This information session, which will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Webermeier Public Library, 617 2nd Street in Milford, will provide the public the opportunity to discuss issues with NDEQ staff, as well as staff from the landfill. There will be several information stations regarding the permitting and operating of the G & P Landfill. This information session is not a public hearing; it is an opportunity to discuss issues one-on-one with state officials. (A hearing could be scheduled at a later date, depending on comments received during the public comment period.)

Proposed Permit Modifications
NDEQ has received a request for permit renewal and modification from G & P Development, Inc. to operate a municipal solid waste landfill at the site generally described as the N ½ SE ¼ Section 14 Township 9 North Range 3 East of the 6th Principal Meridian Seward County, Nebraska.

The major permit modification is for a proposed lateral expansion of the waste disposal area contiguous to the west boundary of the existing disposal area. The proposed lateral expansion will expand the permitted site boundary to the west by about 37 acres, bringing the total G & P Development property to 117 acres. For more specific details of the proposed expansion.

Based on review of the application and the current compliance status, NDEQ proposes to renew and modify this solid waste management permit. If approved, the permit would be in effect from June 16, 2012 through June 15, 2017.

Public Comment Period
The public comment period is open through April 6, 2012. During this period, the public may submit written comment regarding the proposed permit, or may request a hearing by writing to David Haldeman, Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, Suite 400, The Atrium, 1200 N Street, P. O. Box 98922, Lincoln, NE 68509-8922. A request for a hearing should clearly state the specific issues proposed to be raised at the hearing. After the public comment period and any public hearing, the Director will make a final decision, and the applicant and other interested persons will be notified of the decision.

Copies of the draft permit, legal notice and administrative record are available at the NDEQ Lincoln office, (address listed above) between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays, and at the Webermeier Public Library in Milford. Please notify NDEQ by March 22, 2012 if alternate formats of material are needed.
