The purpose of this Guidance Document is to provide guidance on the correct procedures for disposal of electronics to include computers and monitors with cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Some electronic equipment contains enough heavy metals, such as lead, to be considered hazardous waste if disposed. For example, lead in color CRTs causes these CRTs to exhibit a characteristic of hazardous waste. This Guidance Document incorporates the CRT solid waste exclusion.

Title 128 – Nebraska Hazardous Waste Regulations is the primary source of regulatory guidance for waste electronics and computers disposal.

Waste electronics generated from households are not regulated as hazardous waste. The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) encourages households to recycle or reuse electronics and computers rather than dispose of them in the trash. Federal and state regulations specifically exclude waste generated at households by the householder from hazardous waste regulation.
