To members of the Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee:

I am pleased to present the Comprehensive Study of Water Quality Monitoring in Nebraska, Phase II report the Department prepared in response to LB1234. This report is formatted to identify the existing situation, potential enhancements to current activities and the cost if those enhancements are adopted.

Nebraska state and local governments presently do an excellent job of collecting water quality data. With more data, water quality trends could be better identified, which would, in turn, improve our resource management decisions.

Included in this report is a summary of potential costs of identified enhancements to existing water quality monitoring activities. It should be noted that federal monies may be available to fund all or part of some identified enhancements, such as TMDL monitoring. Of course, at this point we are not advocating for the appropriation of these funds, but merely provide this information as required by LB 1234.

Also, some of these costs may be lowered through collaborative efforts with other state agencies or local governments.

I look forward to discussing this report or other environmental issues with you.

Sincerely,

Mike Linder
Director
