Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution, unlike pollution from point sources (e.g., industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants, etc.), comes from many diffuse sources and results in the alteration of the chemical, physical, biological, or radiological integrity of water. Both point and nonpoint sources may generate conventional and toxic pollutants. Although point and nonpoint sources may contribute many of the same kinds of pollutants, they are usually generated in different volumes, combinations, and concentrations.

This document was compiled by the NDEQ. Several federal, state, and local agencies and groups involved in nonpoint source management provided information and helped facilitate its preparation.
